You send a snap to a friend, and they don’t open it. The next day, still nothing. After a few days, you start to wonder if that snap still exists somewhere. The answer depends on the type of conversation and the settings chosen, but Snapchat applies specific time limits before deleting unviewed content.
Unopened snap in private conversation: the 31-day limit
The default rule on Snapchat is deletion after viewing. When all recipients have seen a snap, the servers automatically delete it. But what happens if no one opens it?
In a private conversation (one-on-one), an unopened snap remains available for up to 31 days on Snapchat’s servers. After this period, the snap is purged, whether the recipient has seen it or not. This 31-day countdown starts from the moment the message is sent.
To find out how long an unopened snap lasts, you also need to consider a parameter often overlooked: the distinction between individual conversation and group conversation.
In group chat, the limit drops to about 7 days. A snap sent in a group and not opened by all members will be deleted much faster than the same snap sent privately. This difference is explained by the volume of data flowing in groups, where Snapchat applies a shorter retention policy.
Visible deletion and server retention: two distinct realities
You may have noticed that a snap disappears from your screen as soon as you view it. This disappearance concerns the app interface. It does not mean that the file is instantly destroyed on the servers.
Cybersecurity guides specify that a technical copy may remain on the servers for up to about 30 days after the snap has disappeared from the app. In practice, the duration during which a snap is visible in the app (a few seconds after opening, or 31 days if it is not opened) and the duration of retention on the server do not coincide exactly.
This nuance has practical implications. In a legal context, for example during a request for the preservation of digital evidence, authorities may ask Snapchat to access content that has already disappeared from the user’s screen. The snap no longer exists for you, but it may still exist on a server.
What this changes in daily life
For most users, this residual retention does not change anything in everyday use. You cannot recover an expired snap from the app. The interface remains true to its promise: content disappears after viewing or expiration of the time limit.
The distinction becomes relevant for privacy or security concerns. If you send sensitive content, keep in mind that deletion on the app side does not guarantee immediate deletion on the server side.
Snapchat settings that modify the lifespan of a snap
The 31-day limit (in private) or 7-day limit (in group) applies to snaps with default settings. However, Snapchat offers several options that modify this behavior.
- The “delete after 24 hours” mode can be activated in the conversation settings. If this setting is chosen, snaps that are not time-limited, looping, or with a bounce effect will be deleted 24 hours after being sent, even if not opened.
- Snaps saved in Memories follow different rules. As long as the user does not manually delete them, they remain stored. Memories are not subject to the 31-day limit.
- Published Stories disappear after 24 hours, regardless of whether they have been viewed or not. This time limit is fixed and does not depend on the number of views.
You can check the active deletion setting in each conversation. Tap on the name of your contact or group, then check the section dedicated to message deletion.
Chat setting and snap setting: two linked settings
A point often a source of confusion: the snap deletion setting depends on the chat deletion setting. If your chats are set to disappear immediately after viewing, you cannot choose to delete snaps after 24 hours. The two settings work together.
To enable 24-hour deletion on snaps, you must first set the chats to “24 hours after being viewed,” “7 days after being viewed,” or “Never.” This prerequisite often goes unnoticed.
Expired snap: can it be recovered from the app?
Once an unopened snap has exceeded its limit (31 days in private, 7 days in group), it disappears permanently from the conversation. The app does not offer any recovery tools for this type of content.
A few clarifications to avoid misunderstandings:
- The “Delete” feature in a chat only removes the message from your own view. If the recipient has not opened it yet, the snap remains accessible on their side until expiration.
- Blocking a contact does not extend or shorten the expiration time of a snap that has already been sent. The countdown continues independently.
- Third-party tools that promise to recover expired snaps do not have access to Snapchat’s servers. Their effectiveness on this type of content is not proven.
If you want to keep a sent snap, the only reliable method is to save it in your Memories before sending it, or to take a screenshot (the recipient will be notified).
An unopened private snap lasts 31 days, an unopened group snap lasts 7 days. These time limits are fixed and do not change based on account age or the type of device used. Beyond these durations, the content is deleted without the possibility of viewing or recovering it from the app.
